How to Remove a Chapstick Stain From a Couch

Mary Ylisela

Chapstick is useful for keeping lips moist, particularly in the wintertime. The oils and wax in Chapstick lock in moisture, preventing chapped skin. If these same oils and wax end up on your couch, however, they can result in a greasy, waxy stain. You will need to remove both the wax and the oily residue.

While Chapstick is good for your lips, it can stain a couch.
  1. Scrape the Chapstick wax off the surface of your couch with the dull side of a table knife. Remove as much as possible, wipe it onto a paper towel and discard it.

  2. Pour cornstarch over the remaining stain. Allow the cornstarch to absorb the oil for a few hours. Vacuum the cornstarch from the couch's surface.

  3. Wet a clean sponge with dry-cleaning solvent. Blot the stain, working from the outside of the stain and moving toward the center. Keep blotting with the solvent until the stain is gone.

  4. Allow the area to air-dry completely.
