How to Steam Clean a Sofa

Steam cleaning is the most effective way to remove dirt, grime and stains from your entire sofa. In addition, steam cleaning will improve your indoor air quality by removing any embedded dust mites, allergens and odors from the upholstery. Regular steam cleaning can keep your sofa looking fresh and new for many years.

Things You Will Need

  • Steam cleaning machine with a hand-held attachment
  • Upholstery cleaning solution
  • Fan or ceiling fan

Steam cleaning is the most effective way to remove dirt, grime and stains from your entire sofa.  In addition, steam cleaning will improve your indoor air quality by removing any embedded dust mites, allergens and odors from the upholstery.

Regular steam cleaning can keep your sofa looking fresh and new for many years. 

  1. Remove the cushions and vacuum the sofa frame and cushions thoroughly to remove all dust and loose soil.
  2. Fill the reservoir of the steam cleaning machine with hot water.
  3. Add the furniture cleaning solution at the dilution recommended by the manufacturer of your steam cleaning machine.
  4. Use the hand-held attachment on the steam cleaning machine to cleanse each of the cushions on the top, bottom and sides.
  5. Go back over each cushion using the suction function to remove as much of the water as possible.
  6. Allow the cushions to air-dry under a fan while cleaning the rest of the sofa. Flip the cushions over after a few minutes to help moisture evaporate from each side.
  7. Use the hand-held attachment on the steam cleaning machine to cleanse the sofa frame on all surfaces.
  8. Go back over the entire sofa using the suction function to remove as much moisture as possible.
  9. Allow the sofa to dry completely before placing the dry cushions back on the frame.
  10. Tip

    Steam clean the sofa on a day with low humidity and use a fan or ceiling fan to speed drying and reduce the risk of mold and mildew growth.
