What Is the Purpose of Insulation?

Table of Contents

There are many factors that go into building a new home, from the roofing to the appliances. One of the most important factors is insulation, yet many do not understand its importance in making a home comfortable.

What Is the Purpose of Insulation?

Function

Insulation regulates the flow of heat inside a home. In the winter, if a house is properly insulated, it will retain warmth. In the summer, it will allow the house to be cooler. Insulation can be measured by its R-flow, which is the insulation's resistance to heat. The higher the R-flow, the better the house is insulated.

Significance

According to US Department of energy, 50 to 70 percent of used energy in American homes comes from heating and cooling. Having a home properly insulated can reduce this amount of energy used, saving on money and helping the environment by saving energy.

Geography

Where a home is built is important in deciding which type of insulation to purchase. Homes in cooler climates need different types of insulation than houses in warmer climates.

Benefits

The benefits of having a home properly insulated are vast. Not only does the homeowner save on energy costs, but homes that are more energy efficient help the environment. Insulation can also have a positive or negative impact on the selling of a home, as the Federal Trade Commission requires a full disclosure from the seller detailing the type of insulation, the thickness and the R-value.

Warning

It is important, when installing insulation, to make sure that the right type is chosen and that it is installed properly. Improperly installed insulation can not only increase heating and cooling bills, but is ineffective in controlling heat flow.
