Frequent urination is a problem.

If you urinate in excess of 25 liters of urine a day, this is called polyuria, which means that you are producing an abnormally large amount of urine during the day, according to the National Library of Medicine. 



The Mayo Clinic reports that diabetes can result in excessive thirst and urination.  In fact, these are the classic signs of diabetes.

If you have diabetes, sugar builds up in your blood, which forces the kidneys to work very hard to filter the sugar and then absorb the excess sugar.  When your kidneys fail to keep up the sugar is excreted into your urine.

Other fluids are pulled from the various tissues in your body.  This makes you urinate more and it can also cause you to become dehydrated.

Of course, the more you drink to become hydrated, the more you are going to go to the bathroom. 

Nighttime Issues

Using the bathroom at night often is a condition.

If you are going to the bathroom a lot during the night this condition is called nocturia.  Urine generally decreases during the night and becomes more concentrated, which allows most people to sleep six to eight hours straight without getting up to go to the bathroom.

However, there are certain medical conditions that can cause frequent urination during the night including diabetes, cystitis, urinary tract infection (UTI), prostatis hyperplasia and congestive heart failure.  Kidney failure and sickle cell anemia are two more conditions that cause frequent urination, according to the National Library of Medicine.

What Medicines are You Taking?

Too much Vitamin D can cause frequent urination.

If you are taking a diuretic (water pill), lithium, propoxyphene, cardiac glycosides, demeclocycline, phenytoin or methoxyflurane, these medications may cause you to get up during the night to urinate.  An excess of vitamin D can also cause frequent nighttime urination, according to Healthnytimescom.

Lifetstyle and Sleeping Disorders

Difficulty sleeping.

In addition, if you are drinking too many fluids, particularly caffeine containing drinks or alcohol, right before bedtime, the odds are you are going to have to get up and urinate during the night.  Sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea, where you forget to breathe momentarily, can also result in frequent nighttime urination.

Too Much Water

Too much water can be a problem.

Psychogenic polydipsia is a mental disorder that makes an individual—women, mostly, over the age of 30--have a constant and strong urge to drink fluids, which, of course, results in excessive urination.  Psychogenic polydipsia is considered a psychologically motivated compulsive thirst.

The Internet Journal of Nephrology explains that self-induced water intoxication and psychosis is a syndrome, albeit a rare one.  Women have been known to drink up to eight liters of water a day.
