Chalk has come a very long way.  Gone are the days when standard white chalk was used on chalkboards alone.

If it's customary for your children to lie on the carpet while using drawing chalk, you've probably noticed chalk stains on your carpet or their clothing.  Here are two easy methods to get any kind of chalk marks off carpets and fabric.

Removing Chalk Marks on Carpets

  1. Use your vacuum cleaner to thoroughly remove all loose chalk particles from the carpet.
  2. Prepare a homemade cleaning solution by adding 2 oz. of liquid dish detergent to 1 cup of warm water. Use a wire whisk to blend the ingredients together until a sudsy foam is created.
  3. Apply the cleaning solution to the chalk marks on the carpet and allow it to penetrate the stain for at least five minutes. Stainmaster advises against rubbing the foam cleaning solution into the carpet.
  4. Use a wet vacuum to remove the cleaning solution from the carpet.
  5. Rinse the area of the carpet where the chalk marks were with cold water.
  6. Inspect the carpet to see if the chalk marks are completely gone. If they are, continue to Step 7. If chalk marks remain, repeat Steps 3 through 5.
  7. Place paper towels or an old towel over the wet spot on the carpet to absorb any water remaining on the carpet.
  8. Allow the carpet to air dry over night.
  9. Use your vacuum cleaner to vacuum the carpet once it's completely dry, if desired.

Removing Chalk Marks on Fabric

  1. Use a fabric brush or a vacuum cleaner to thoroughly remove all loose chalk particles from the fabric.
  2. Place the fabric on layers of paper towels or an old towel with the chalk stained side facing down.
  3. Dip a cloth in rubbing alcohol and gently blot the back of the fabric.
  4. Rinse the fabric in cold or warm water.
  5. Apply a small amount of liquid dish detergent to the chalk marks.
  6. Use your finger to work the detergent into the stain.
  7. Allow the detergent to penetrate the chalk marks for several minutes.
  8. Machine wash and dry the fabric as you normally would.
  9. Warning

Always test cleaning solutions on an inconspicuous part of your carpet to be sure that the solution will not damage your carpet.
