What To Do When a Maytag Washer Will Not Start

Misty Faucheux

Maytag is a brand of home appliances sold by the Whirlpool Corporation. Maytag offers both top- and front-loading washing machines available in either 24- or 27-inch wide sizes. When your washing machine won't start, it can be very frustrating; however, you don't have to immediately call Maytag's customer service for assistance. Troubleshoot the issue to avoid service calls and fees.

No Power

If your Maytag washing machine isn't starting, verify that the power cord is connected to a live outlet. Test the outlet with another three-prong appliance. If the outlet is working, plug the power cord securely into the outlet. Do not use an extension cord or adapter. Your washing machine won't start unless the lid is closed. Remove any objects keeping the lid from closing properly. Select a wash setting and pull out the knob to start the cycle. If it still won't start, reset the circuit breaker or change out the fuses if they are blown.

Lid Switch

The lid switch is located near the door frame inside the main housing. Maytag lid switches are made out of plastic. The washer won't start if the lid switch is defective. Disconnect the washing machine from the power supply and open up the housing. Examine the switch to see if it has any burn marks on it or if it's corroded. Order a replacement part from Maytag or an authorized parts dealer if the part appears damaged.

Not Filling

If your Maytag washer is not filling with water, see if both the hot and cold water faucets are turned on. Check the water inlet hose and straighten it if it is kinked. Replace the hose if it is badly crushed. Turn off the water and disconnect the fill hoses from the washing machine and water inlet valve. Place the hose under a bright light and use a flashlight to look inside the hose. Clean out the hose if it is clogged. Use an object, like a plastic utensil or toothpick, to remove the clog. Never overload the washing machine as this can prevent water from entering the tub. If you opened the washer after it started filling, close the lid. Check the water pressure with a water pressure gauge. If it's below 30 PSI, shut off the water in other parts of the home then restart the washer.

Not Spinning

Your Maytag washing machine won't spin if the washing machine is overloaded. It may even skip the cycle to prevent damage to the machine. Remove some clothing then redistribute the remaining clothing around the agitator, especially if the load is unbalanced. Over-sudsing will also cause your washer not to spin. If you see a lot of suds, run the cycle again without any additional detergent. Use less detergent in the future. Verify that the drainage hoses are not kinked or clogged. Do not install the hose more than 96 inches above the floor. If the pump isn't pumping water out, stop the washing machine and open up the main housing. Examine the pump pulley and see if it turns. If not, replace it.
