Monitored home alarm systems communicate to a central alarm monitoring station and provide coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Personnel at the monitoring station will send help if an alarm triggers.
The added level of protection comes with added costs: the homeowner needs to pay the security company a monthly fee to monitor the system. The fee is paid regardless of whether an alarm is triggered.
Converting to an unmonitored system saves you the monthly monitoring cost.
- Review your monitoring service contract and check for any “early termination fees” or any special provisions the company requires when a client wishes to cancel the monitoring service. Comply with the terms of your agreement in terms of when you can terminate the service and how to notify the alarm company.
- Contact your alarm company and notify them that you wish to discontinue its monitoring services. Typically, the company will send you a cancellation form. Fill out the form and send it back to the company.
- Install motion-sensitive strobe lights to the exterior of your home. Inform your neighbors that your alarm system is no longer being monitored and discuss when the neighbors should call the police. For example, you may want them to call if the alarm has been sounding for longer than five minutes.
- Set your alarm system using the same code you used when it was being commercially monitored. Even though you discontinued monitoring services, you still get to keep the equipment installed and the equipment will still work with the same pass code. The difference is that when an alarm sounds the only person who can respond to it is you or your neighbors.
