How to Make a Hanger Stacker

Kim Blakesley

A hanger stacker organizes unused hangers in a central location. Manufactured hanger stackers are made from metal. The dimensions of the stackers are 18 1/2 inches wide by 7 inches deep by 35 inches high with an overall height of 37 inches.

Hanger stackers keep empty hangers from taking up valuable space in your closet.

The metal bars on the back of the stacker are taller than the front by 2 inches. This allows for the placement of the hook on the clothes hanger. The front and back bars keep the hangers in place during the stacking process.

  1. Cut two of the 36-inch dowels to the length of 34 inches.

  2. Insert the two 34-inch dowels between a bench vise and lightly secure into place. Move the dowels so they are 6 inches apart and 2 inches above the surface of the bench vise. Level the top edges of the two dowels so they are on a horizontal plane. Squeeze wood glue on the end of the two dowels.

  3. Hold the wide face of the 18-inch board on a horizontal plane. Center the 18-inch board over the two dowels secured in the bench vise. Line the closest edge of the board up with the outside edge of the dowels. Place the board on the dowels and hold in place. Secure the board to the dowels using a 1 1/2-inch wood screw. Remove the dowels and the board from the bench vise.

  4. Insert the two 36-inch dowels between a bench vise and lightly secure into place. Move the dowels so they are 4 inches apart and 2 inches above the surface of the bench vise. Level the top edges of the two dowels so they are on a horizontal plane. Squeeze wood glue on the end of the two dowels.

  5. Center the 18-inch board over the two dowels secured in the bench vise. Make sure the previously secured dowels are pointing straight down. Line up the closest edge of the board with the outside edge of the dowels. Place the board on the dowels and hold in place. Secure the board to the dowels using a 1 1/2-inch wood screw. Remove the dowels and the board from the bench vise.

  6. Flip the hanger stacker over so the flat board is standing on the ground.

  7. Tip

Place the hook of the hanger between the two 36-inch tall dowels. Allow the hanger to drop to the bottom of the stacker. The 34-inch dowels hold the bottom of the hanger in place so it does not slide forward.
