What Is Excelled Leather?

Tucker Cummings

Navigating the world of leather goods can be complicated. Terms like "Clemence leather," "Togo leather" and "Nappa leather" can be confusing to a novice. Upon hearing the term "Excelled Leather," you might think that it is another type of leather.

Excelled Leather is actually a company, not a term for a distinct type of leather. The full name of the company is Excelled Sheepskin and Leather, and it is known for menswear, women's apparel and custom leather goods.

Company History

The Excelled Sheepskin & Leather Coat Corporation was founded in 1927. Today, it is a leader in the leather apparel industry. According to the company's official website, Excelled has annual sales of more than $80 million. The product lines range from low to moderate prices, with most items costing between $40 and $400. Excelled Leather goods are available online, through major department stores and under private label. The company's corporate offices are at 1400 Broadway in New York City.

Menswear

The menswear line at Excelled Leather changes every year, but generally includes vests, jackets (both motorcycle and bomber inspired) and parkas. Standard, Tall and Plus sizes are available in most styles, with Small being the smallest. Some styles are available in up to size 5X. The leather sources and styles vary, and the collection includes Nappa leather, lambskin and cow leather. Nappa leather is made from pigskin.

Women's Apparel

Consisting mainly of trench coats, blazers, jackets, and car coats, the women's line of Excelled Leather features designs cut from suede, lambskin, Nappa leather and cow leather. Faux fur, chinchilla fur and rabbit fur are also used for linings and for creating soft hoods.

Custom Leather/Private Label

Custom leather goods can be created to order by Excelled Leather by wholesale business clients, and can include design touches like rhinestones, appliqué, embroidery, printed linings, or chenille. Excelled Leather also creates and sells leather goods to be sold under private label for other apparel companies, including Chaps, Columbia Sportswear and Stacy Adams. The company also has a joint venture with the design team of Reilly/Olmes.
