How to Stencil a Kitchen Pass Through
Some kitchens are equipped with a pass through. This is a short wall between the kitchen and dining room that has a shelf on top of it, and the area is used to pass food and dishes back and forth between the kitchen and dining room.
If you're looking for a way to improve the appearance of your pass through, adding a stencil to it can be the answer.
Clean the walls. Use a solution with a mild detergent unless there is mold, then use a solution of three parts water to one part bleach. Allow the walls to dry.
Mark the bottom edge of the stencil by measuring the distance from the floor and making small marks with a pencil. Connect the marks by drawing a light pencil line with a straightedge.
Mark the top edge of the stencil by measuring the distance from the top of the pass through and making small marks with a pencil. Connect the marks by drawing a light pencil line with a straightedge.
Place painter's tape on the walls on the outer edges of the pencil lines.
Apply stencil adhesive to the back of the stencil. Wait until the adhesive becomes sticky.
Place the stencil on the wall between the strips of painter's tape. Check the stencil with a level to make sure it's straight.
Pour small amounts of the different paint colors you're using for the stencil onto a plastic plate to create a palette.
Place the tip of the stencil brush into the first color that you're applying to the stencil. Cover just the tips of the bristles with paint, wiping off any excess with a paper towel.
Paint the correct sections of the stencil by using short, quick strokes. Continue painting until you are ready to use the next color. Use different brushes, or thoroughly clean the brush between colors if you're only using one brush. Allow the paint to dry.
Pull the stencil carefully off of the wall. Place it on the pass through adjacent to the previous section, keeping it perfectly aligned.
Continue painting the stencil on the wall until the pass through is complete.
Remove the painter's tape from the walls.
