How to Open House Windows Quietly

Emily McNair

As they age, windows tend to develop noises as they open and close. It may stem from a variety of issues: the window track may need grease, the window could have come off the track or it may just be in need of a thorough cleaning. If you have a sleeping baby around, even the smallest noise can become a disturbance.

Handling the window carefully can minimize noise and keep peace in your household.

Tip

During a time when noise is not an issue, you can apply a spray lubricant to the window tracks in an attempt to help the window slide more smoothly in its tracks and minimize any noise issues you may be experiencing.

  1. Locate the window you want to open and unlock all mechanisms on the window.

  2. Apply light, even pressure on the window sill to open a window that slides vertically or horizontally. Place your palms evenly on the frame and lightly apply pressure while sliding the window open.

  3. Slowly slide the window to open. Be sure that you are not pressing against the window and putting pressure on the window tracks but simply guiding it along.

  4. Crank windows can be opened using light, even pressure on the cranking mechanism. Use the crank at a moderate speed and ensure you are not jerking the crank knob during your rotations.

  5. Call your local window repair center if you are experiencing excessive noise issues upon opening your window. Depending on when your windows were installed, they may still be under warranty. Contact your window installer for warranty information.
