Easy-Off Ingredients

Table of Contents

Easy-Off is a popular aerosol spray that effectively makes the task of cleaning in and around an oven much easier. Easy-Off contains many chemicals, each serving their own purpose. Knowing what these chemicals are can help you be safer around the house.

Butane

Butane is an organic solvent that helps to break down the carbon that usually surrounds the gunk you are trying to get out of your oven. Butane is very dangerous to inhale so be sure to take precautions when using it.

Monoethanolamine

Similar to Butane, monoethanolamine is an organic compound that works to help reduce the amount of gunk that you have on your stove. It neutralizes some fatty acids and turns the others into solvents to help clean. It has the properties of alcohol because it mixes with water and has a high boiling point, and amine for the fact that it absorbs water. This compound is also very dangerous to inhale.

Diethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether

Diethylene glycol monobutyl ether's purpose is to delay the evaporation of monoethanolamine so that it has more time to actually serve its purpose. Diethylene glycol monobutyl ether by itself also helps to get rid of fats and grease. Other products such as brake fluid and hair coloring also contain diethylene glycol monobutyl ether.

Sodium Hydroxide

Sodium hydroxide works in conjunction with butane and MEA to further clean. Once butane and MEA soften the hard coating, sodium hydroxide enters to evaporate the fatty acids. Because of this ingredient, you cannot use Easy-Off on aluminum, because it will release highly flammable hydrogen.

Diethanolamine

Diethanolamine is what gives Easy-Off its foamy texture when sprayed. The foamy texture helps to keep the other ingredients from evaporating so they that can effectively do their job. Diethanolamine is also dangerous in the fact that it has been shown to slow down brain development.
