How to Stain French Doors
French doors are some of the most aesthetically pleasing doors found in homes. The paned windows give them character and allow natural light into your space. However, French doors can also be the most difficult to paint or stain. But with some preparation and a little patience, you can stain your French doors with attractive results.

Cover the windows with newspaper cut 2 inches smaller than the length and width of each glass pane. Center the newspaper onto the window and secure it by taping the edges to the glass. Do not place tape over the wood frame.

Sand the wood frame to remove old paint, stain, or imperfections. Clean off any dust or debris.

Apply the first coat of stain to the wooden frame lightly, using a small, narrow paintbrush. Paint in the direction of the wood grain. Use a cloth to wipe the stain after the first coat. Wipe in the direction of the grain. Allow the stain to dry.

Apply additional coats of stain until you achieve the desired color level. Wipe after each coat and allow the wood to dry before applying the next coat.

Remove the tape and newspaper. Clean the glass to remove any dirt or debris.
