How to Change the Color of Window Frames

Jeremiah Blanchard

Homeowners have different tastes when it comes to color and style. Sometimes you may want to alter the color of certain areas of your home, whether they be walls, doors, trim or window frames. To do this, you must prep the area to avoid getting paint on other surfaces in the house.

Learn how to change the color of window frames.

To change the color of window frames, all you'll need are a few painting supplies.

  1. Place protective painters tape onto the window glass panes. You can use masking tape, or blue painters tape. Ensure that the tape covers the glass completely, especially near the edges.

  2. Add protective tape to the outer perimeter of the window frame. Place at least 2 inches of tape around the perimeter to avoid getting paint on the house.

  3. Lightly sand the frame and pane seams with 400-grit fine sandpaper. If the frame is metallic, use a .0004 steel wool to lightly scuff the surface. Do this to the entire frame.

  4. Paint the frame your preferred color with an exterior weather-proof, enamel paint using a paint brush. Ensure that you coat the frame once, then let it dry and apply a second coat to add luster, and rich color.

  5. Repeat this process for the interior part of the frame if desired with interior enamel paint. The allow the paint to dry for at least 24 hours prior to removing the tape.

  6. Warning

If painting the frame indoors, ensure that you use a drop cloth to avoid spilling paint on carpet or wood floor.
