How to Remove Stickers on a Bike

Both the manufacturer and the rider might place decals and stickers on bikes. Stickers and bike decals are normally large and use a strong adhesive to ensure the sticker remains attached despite rough riding and weather conditions. Because of the strength of the adhesive, the stickers do not just peel right off. Take care when trying to remove a sticker or decal so the paint and bike do not get scratched or ruined.

Lubricating Spray

A bike owner may use stickers or decals to personalize bicycles.
  1. Spray a lubricating spray on area with the sticker. Let it sit for 15 minutes.

  2. Slowly peel back the sticker with your fingers. For a large or stubborn sticker, spray additional lubricating spray as you are peeling and lifting the sticker.

  3. Remove any remaining residue with a lubricating spray or commercially sold residue remover. Spray or cover the area with remaining residue and wipe away with a rag.

Soapy Water

  1. Mix 1 tbsp. liquid dishwashing soap with water as hot as you can tolerate in a bucket. Using a sponge or rag, soak the sticker with the soapy water.

  2. Lift the edges of the sticker and continue lifting to peel the sticker off.

  3. Wipe the area with the soapy water to remove any remaining residue.

  4. If any residue still remains, remove with a lubricating spray or commercially sold residue remover. Spray or cover the area with remaining residue and wipe away with a rag.

Oil

  1. Soak the sticker or decal with a light oil, such as baby oil, mineral oil or vegetable oil. Let it sit overnight.

  2. Lift the edges of the sticker or decal, and slowly peel back the sticker. For larger or stubborn stickers, add oil as you peel the sticker back. Let sit 15 minutes once you add more oil.

  3. If any residue still remains, remove with a lubricating spray or commercially sold residue remover. Spray or cover the area with remaining residue and wipe away with a rag.

Warnings

  • Use your hands and fingers to peel back the sticker. Using any other item may cause scratches to the surface of the bike.
  • Do not heat the sticker with a blow dryer to remove it. The paint may peel off with this method.
