How to Install a Smeg Oven

Chris Miksen

As a brand that offers both electrical and gas ovens, Smeg ovens come in multiple styles to satisfy every taste. From stainless steel to an outer black shell, the choice is up to you. Only installation stands between you and your working Smeg oven. The process varies, depending on if you're installing a gas or electrical oven. Once the necessary connections are made, you'll be ready to cook up a meal for yourself or your family.

Install a Smeg Gas Oven

Step 1

Fit the Smeg oven in your kitchen. You’ll need a space that has an electrical outlet and gas line nearby. The space must also be large enough so that the stove doesn’t scrape counters, appliances or walls. Additionally, you must have a ventilation hood.

Step 2

Adjust the oven for the type of gas you’re using. Smeg gas ovens are set to operate with natural gas by default. If you're using another type of gas, you must adjust the regulator inside the oven cavity. Remove the burner and all accessories in the oven cavity to access the regulator. Adjust the regulator to match the type of gas you’re using. Although all Smeg models are different, the same basic instructions apply.

Step 3

Level the oven by adjusting the oven's four feet until the appliance is perfectly level. Place either a bubble or digital level on top of the oven to ensure your adjustments are correct. The stove is level when either the bubble is in between both lines on the level, or the numbers on the digital level read "0.0." To adjust a foot, loosen the screw on the foot and make your adjustments. Plug your oven into an outlet.

Step 4

Contact your local municipality for laws regarding the connection of gas appliances. Each state and city has a set of laws regarding gas connections, and you must obey those laws. For example, some municipalities require you to use a copper tube rather than a steel hose to connect an appliance to a gas line.

Step 5

Connect the Smeg gas oven to your gas-supply line. Use either a copper tube or steel hose. Apply a pipe-thread compound to connector threads. Tighten the connection with an adjustable wrench. You may need to use a provided adapter to connect the stove to the gas line. Turn on the gas to your stove. This is not a dangerous installation in itself, and you will check to see if there's a gas leak. However, if you're hesitant around gas, it's better to call a plumber, who will install the oven for you.

Step 6

Mix a small amount of dishwater detergent and water; just enough detergent to make the water soapy. Apply the mixture to the gas connections. If you see bubbles, shut off the gas and tighten the connections. The bubbles indicate that gas is leaking out. This testing method poses no danger.

Step 7

Push your oven in place. Hold the copper or steel tube with your hand until the oven is in its final position, so that the tubing doesn’t kink or crack. Set your oven’s clock and test the burners and oven to ensure everything works properly.

Install an Electrical Smeg Oven

Step 1

Place your Smeg electrical oven against a wall in your kitchen that has an available outlet. Pull the oven out and push it in to ensure it fits properly. The sides of the oven should have enough space so that they don’t rub against appliances, counters and walls.

Step 2

Set a level on top of the oven. Adjust the feet of the oven until the bubble of the level is in the middle of the two lines, or a digital level reads “0.0.” Adjusting the feet requires you to loosen a screw on the feet and move the feet to the appropriate level.

Step 3

Plug the oven into an outlet. Set the clock to the correct time.

Step 4

Test the oven by turning on each burner. Each burner should quickly heat up. Turn the oven to "bake," and set it to the lowest temperature. Open the oven door after a minute or two to ensure it’s heating. If nothing appears to heat up when you turn it on, check the plug to ensure it's fully inserted into the outlet.
