A septic backup is cause for concern, because the remedy could require costly repair. It's just as possible, though, that when water starts going the wrong way, and your lower toilets and drains overflow, the cause is a simple clog.

Septic System Design
Your septic system is tailored for the size of your house and the topography of your property. Drain-field failure is the most serious septic problem that can develop, and by the time it has become acute, there may be standing water and sewer odors around the drainpipes.

Responding to a Backup
