Peroxide Recipe to Get Rid of Skunk Smell
When you upset a skunk, get ready for the consequences. The skunk’s defensive mechanism, that awful-smelling spray, is composed of some very noxious chemicals. According to William F. Wood, a chemist at Humboldt State University, to get rid of the stink, you will need to oxidize the compounds in the skunk’s secretions.
A hydrogen peroxide solution works well for this. Unfortunately it will only work on your dog's fur. For skunk smell on wood or in fabrics, you will need to use household bleach, which is not suitable for use on dogs.
Mix the Solution
First off, if Rosco got into it with a skunk again, make sure he doesn’t get into the house--you don't want to end up having to wash floors, carpet and furniture as well as the dog. Instead, corral him in an area where you can work on him and find a tall-sided bucket. The mixture will foam up significantly, so the taller the bucket, the better. This foam is an integral part of the chemical reaction so don't mix the solution until you are ready to apply it to the dog's coat.
In the bucket, mix together a solution of 1 quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), and 1 tsp. of dish soap. Some people prefer to use Dawn brand liquid soap as they claim it dissolves the greasiness of the skunk’s secretions better than other brands. The peroxide you use should be fresh, as it decomposes over time.
For larger dogs or dogs with thick coats, you may need to double or triple the amount of solution.
Apply the Solution
Wash the dog thoroughly with the solution, making sure to keep it out of his eyes. Concentrate applying the solution to the area where he was sprayed, but do wash the entire dog. If you happen to get some of the solution in his eyes, rinse them thoroughly with clear water and call your veterinarian for advice.
If the smell is still apparent after washing, you can repeat the procedure, rinsing well when finished. Make sure you dispose of any leftover solution and don’t store it in a closed container as the solution may cause the container to explode.
