Refrigerator Rust Repair

Kimberly Johnson

Rust is a damaging process of oxidation that occurs when metal objects come into contact with water and air. The water and air interact with the minerals in the metal to produce a reddish colored area of flaky metal. If not remedied, the rust will advance until it actually creates a hole in the metal surface.

Repairing a rusty refrigerator

Refrigerators sometimes develop rust on them when exposed to high levels of humidity. To repair refrigerator rust, the rust must be removed and then sealed so that it cannot spread.

  1. Remove all food from the refrigerator and unplug it from the wall. Move the refrigerator outdoors or to a garage and open the door to allow all moisture to evaporate. If the refrigerator has a freezer section, open the freezer door as well and discard the ice.

  2. Pour one teaspoon of powdered cleaner onto a damp scrubber sponge. Scrub the entire surface of the refrigerator with the scrubber sponge, paying special attention to the rusty areas. Rinse the scrubber sponge in clean water and wipe the refrigerator surface to remove the cleaner residue. Dry the surface of the refrigerator with a clean towel.

  3. Sand the entire surface of the refrigerator lightly with a fine grit sand paper such as 200 grit. The purpose is to rough up the surface so that the paint will adhere better. Wipe down the surface with a damp rag to remove all traces of dust.

  4. Apply a rust primer to the areas of the refrigerator that have rust on them. Simply paint on a thin layer using a paint brush and allow it to dry. Rust primer seals the rusty areas which prevents the rust from getting worse or spreading.

  5. Apply masking tape to all areas of the refrigerator that should not be painted such as the handle, metal components and rubber gaskets.

  6. Paint the entire surface of the refrigerator with a urethane reinforced enamel paint. Use a paint roller to apply the paint in long even stokes. Allow the paint to dry and then apply two more thin coats.

  7. Move the refrigerator back into the building, plug in the power cord and begin using.
