Ways to Raise the Head of a Mattress
According to Chest journal, one in four Americans suffered from night heartburn in 2005 alone. Many individuals also battle with chronic heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
For individuals suffering from these conditions, getting to sleep at night without having chest discomfort or gasping is often difficult. A reasonable solution is to find simple ways to raise the head of the bed to receive relief.
Books and Boards
Thick books can raise the head of the bed by 3 to 4 inches. Place the thick books under the head end of the bed at the bedposts to elevate for some breathing relief. Flat boards can also have the same effect as books. If books or boards are placed under the bedpost, it will not affect the mattress. An even amount of books or boards should be placed on both sides for equal balance.
Blocks
Wooden blocks raise the head of the bed anywhere from 6 to 8 inches. This elevation is extremely beneficial for those suffering from GERD or chronic heartburn. Wood blocks should be secured firmly under the bedposts all the way across the head of the bed. Wooden blocks should at least be 4x4 but can be larger in dimension according to personal need.
Wedge Pillow
While it is not necessary to spend large amounts of money to raise the head of the bed, a small investment could be made for a special wedge pillow. These pillows are designed to elevate the body so that it is on an incline. A special wedge pillow may be more beneficial for those who share a bed. Since this pillow lifts the body, it helps the individual who needs to sleep on an incline without raising the whole bed.
