How to Remove Scratches From a VCT Tile

Sarah Jones

Vinyl composition tile (VCT) is a common flooring and is valued for its durability. It is often used in high-traffic areas, such as kitchens and commercial properties. VCT is generally simple to care for and clean, but it may receive scratches. Removing the scratches involves a fairly straightforward process and requires only household items and tools.

Step 1

Clean the VCT floor thoroughly with vinyl floor cleaner. Wipe the tile dry with a clean cloth.

Step 2

Fill very small scratches with touch-up paint that matches the color of the tile. Simply apply a light stroke of paint to the scratches.

Use a clean cloth to dab larger scratches with lacquer thinner. Let the lacquer thinner dry on the tile overnight.

Step 3

Apply a dab of liquid seam sealer onto the scratches with a clean cloth. Allow the sealer to dry for six hours.

Step 4

Sand the scratches with fine-grit sandpaper to even the tile surface. Apply a bit of vinyl floor finish to the scratches to make the tile look like new.
