Instructions for the RUUD Silhouette II

Darrin Meyer

The Ruud Silhouette II is a compact two-stage gas furnace that is rated for inputs of 50,000 to 150,000 BTUs.

Installing newer, more energy-efficient furnaces can save you money.

Ideal for attics, closets and other storage areas, it features an integrated furnace control, two-speed induced draft blower and washable filter, and is designed to run at less than 100 percent capacity during off-peak usage. Once installed, the Silhouette II is designed to be easy to operate and maintain while keeping energy costs to a minimum.

  1. Turn off all electric power to the Silhouette and set the thermostat to the lowest setting before activating. Remove the control panel door and turn the gas control knob to the "Off" position.

  2. Wait five minutes before turning the furnace on. If you smell gas, do not try to light any appliance or turn on any electric switches. If you do not smell gas, turn the gas control knob to the "On" position to turn on the gas to the main burners. The furnace features an automatic ignition device, so there is no need to manually light any pilot burner.

  3. Turn on the electric power to the Silhouette furnace, set the thermostat to the setting of your choice and close the control panel door.

  4. Remove the blower compartment access door to clean or change the filters. Push up and in on the filters to disconnect them from the retaining rod before pulling them out. Vacuum the filters to remove dirt, and wash them with warm water and detergent. Allow the filters to dry before reinstalling.

  5. Tip

Cleaning the Silhouette's air filters often enables it to operate as efficiently as possible. Have the furnace inspected annually by a qualified professional to check the condition of the unit, along with the ducts and pipes connected to it.

    Warning

Turn off the electric power to the Silhouette each time before opening the front panel cover to prevent shock and severe injury.

Call a service provider or gas supplier if the furnace overheats to the point where the overtemperature limit switch is tripped. Have it checked for problems before manually resetting the switch on your own.
