How to Care for Urethane-coated Tables

Charlotte Johnson

Urethane finishes, which are also referred to as "polyurethane" finishes, are popular because they are more resistant to moisture and heat than regular varnish finishes. You need to periodically clean a urethane-coated table on which you work or eat to keep it sanitary and looking good.

If your table is covered with urethane, caring for it is very simple. Cleaning and protecting the table's surface will be your primary concerns.

  1. Wet a cloth in warm, sudsy water and use it to wipe the table.

  2. Use white vinegar periodically to wipe the table. White vinegar is a gentle, yet effective cleaner, deodorizer and mild disinfectant.

  3. Dust the table with a microfiber cloth. Don't use furniture oil or polish, which can dull the urethane finish.

  4. Position your table in an area that has a moderate temperature and is free of moisture.

  5. Keep the table out of direct sunlight, which can damage and fade the urethane coating.
