How to Brighten Colors in the Washing Machine

Washing clothes is the basic process of removing dirt and particles from clothing, which freshens them for repeat wearings. After repeated washes, the colors in clothing have a tendency to become dull. Whether you want to brighten the white in white clothes or refresh the colors in colored clothes, you can accomplish this task in a few simple steps without deviating too much from your usual routine. Additionally, the ingredients you need can often be found in your own kitchen.

Brightening your clothes can be done in a few simple steps.

Put your entire load of white or colored clothes in the washing machine and begin the wash cycle as you usually would.

Add 1/2 cup of white distilled vinegar to the rinse cycle. Make sure you do not miss the entire cycle. In addition to brightening colors, vinegar also removes detergent residue, and acts as a static cling reducer and fabric softener that also removes mildew and mold.

Replace the white distilled vinegar with lemon juice if you are out of vinegar, as lemon juice also brightens clothing when added to the rinse cycle.

Place clothes in the dryer or hang them to dry, depending on your preference. The end result is brighter and softer clothes without detergent residue.

Things You Will Need
