How to Repair a Pella Storm Door Latch

Amy Kingston

A Pella storm door that is difficult to open or close may be the result of a faulty or misaligned door latch. If the door hangs or doesn’t latch, the door latch is not properly aligned. If the handle must be lifted to open or close the door, the hardware is upside down.

A loose handle should be tightened to function properly. All these issues can be resolved within a matter of minutes using only a screwdriver.

Door Does Not Latch

  1. Adjust the strike plate. Use a screwdriver to loosen the screws securing the latch plate.

  2. Adjust the latch plate up or down as needed. Tighten the screws.

  3. Open and close the door to check alignment. Continue adjusting the strike plate until the door latches correctly. Proceed to Step 4 if the door still does not latch properly.

  4. Remove the screws from the latch. Move the latch to the left or right as needed. Replace the screws and tighten. Use the screwdriver to chisel out any wood in the frame that may prevent the door from latching.

  5. Open and close the door to ensure that it latches. Continue adjusting as needed.

Handle Must be Lifted to Open the Door

  1. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws securing the handle. Remove the handles from the door.

  2. Reinstall the hardware and handle according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Reverse the latch nose, if needed.

  3. Open and close the door to ensure that it works properly.

Door Handle is Loose

  1. Find the set screw on the handle. This screw is typically beneath or on the sides of the handle.

  2. Turn the set screw clockwise with a screwdriver to tighten it. If the screw does not tighten, the set screw is stripped. Replace the handle.

  3. Open and close the door to ensure the handle is properly secured.
