- Scrub brush and bucket
Mold and mildew are often considered the same thing. They are most often found in damp areas around the house like bathrooms, laundry rooms and basements.
Once you have identified that you have a mold problem, you can readily kill and get rid of the black deposits and the musty smell by cleaning your home with a few simple things that you should already have in the house.
- Determine where the mold is. Look in corners, beneath sinks, near floor drains and anywhere else where constant humidity may give the right environment to grow mold.
- Remove it yourself. Do not attempt to wipe the mold when it is dry because you will risk spreading the spores into the air. Lightly spray water on the mold to make it damp which will keep it in place when you clean it away.
- Mix a solution of 1 part dish detergent, 5 parts bleach and 20 parts warm water in a bucket. If the material that you are cleaning, like ceramic tiles or metal, can withstand a stronger bleach solution, you can add up to 10 parts bleach of the same solution. Use a scrub brush with bristles and wash down the pre-dampened surface with this solution.
- Make sure there is very good circulation for the surface to dry quickly and completely. use a fan if needed to circulate the air.
Do not mix a detergent that contains ammonia with bleach
