How to Use a Kobalt Spray Gun

It offers full functionality in a compact size and is designed to last a lifetime. The kicker, and probably the three words most harmonious to homeowners, are, "No assembly required." After learning the proper techniques to calibrate and handle the spray gun, most users will be able to produce a smooth, uniform finish on just about any surface.

1. Unpack the unit if it is new and this is a first-time use. Have the parts list (comes with unit) handy, because if anything is missing from the package, you can immediately phone customer service to have replacement items shipped to your home. Do not attempt any type of assembly unless all pieces are present. This could lead to malfunction or injury if not followed completely. Most users can fully assemble the components in under three minutes.

2. Assemble the spray gun by identifying the spray gun and paint cup holder. Attach the gun to the paint cup cover as shown by the diagram. Connect the air tube from the gun to the atomizing regulator valve, then to the air compressor. Set the pressure at 60 lbs. per square inch, which is the normal operating value. Make sure that the atomizing regulator valve is fully open before adjusting to the proper range. Pour paint into the paint cup and attach it to the spray gun/cover assembly.

3. Aim the gun at a slight angle to the surface being painted. For best results, hold the unit approximately six to 12 inches from the target and move parallel back and forth in a smooth, uniform fashion to assure compete coverage. A good practice is to slightly overlap the last stroke and release the trigger just before finishing a pass. This will ensure a smooth finish and helps minimize overspray. It is a good habit to keep the wings of the spray head on a horizontal line. This helps make a vertical, fan-shaped pattern that helps ensure complete coverage.

4. Set the lowest possible atomizing pressure (air flow) when painting to avoid obtaining a thin, "watery" appearance to the painted surface. Adjust the atomization pressure by turning the airflow regulator clockwise to reduce airflow. In conjunction with that adjustment, it is also advisable to increase the material control by turning the fluid control knob counterclockwise to increase paint flow to the nozzle. An excellent painted appearance will result from a balanced combination of adequate airflow and adequate paint flow. This ratio varies from paint brand to paint brand and will need constant monitoring to achieve best results.

5. Perform periodic maintenance to keep painting results consistent. Immerse the front end of the gun in solvent after use. Never submerse the entire gun into this kind of cleaner; it could lead to damage and void the warranty. Use a rag to wipe down the outside of the unit and a wire brush to remove any excess paint that has accumulated. Another good practice is to oil the unit on a daily basis as well. The most important areas are the fluid need packing, air valve packing, and the trigger pivot point. It is also advisable never to use silicone as it may damage vital internal parts that may cause defects in the finish application.

Tip

Practice holding the paint gun and using a wide, sweeping motion with your hand, being certain that the gun never stops moving while paint is being dispersed.
