How to Mix Pounce Insecticide

Lillian Downey

Pounce insecticide isn't your average household or garden bug killer. It is permethrin-based, and it is typically used on large farms. It can be dispersed by sprayers or crop-dusting airplanes.

Pounce should not be inhaled.

It also, however, can be used for homes and gardens if mixed correctly and the applicator takes special care to wear protective clothing. The instructions for Pounce usually advise mixing it with enough water to allow for good coverage -- which is vague at best. If you use Pounce at home, follow more specific mixing instructions.

  1. Put on protective, waterproof clothing as well as rubber or water-resistant boots, long, rubber gloves, eye protection and spray mask. Those protective items are necessary because it is not safe to come in contact with Pounce insecticide.

  2. Mix 10 milliliters of Pounce insecticide with 5 liters of water -- or about 2 teaspoons of Pounce with 5 1/4 quarts of water -- in a plastic bucket that holds at least 5 gallons. The resulting amount treats 100 square meters, or just over 1,000 square feet.

  3. Stir the Pounce-water mixture with a gloved hand or a disposable, wooden paint-stirring stick until all the Pounce dissolves in the water.

  4. Place a funnel in the opening of a handheld chemical pump sprayer's reservoir tank, and slowly pour the Pounce insecticide into the sprayer by way of the funnel.

  5. Tip

Do not spray Pounce on edible crops more than seven to 10 days before harvest. Use Pounce on calm days without wind so the product does not drift.

    Warning

Do not inhale, swallow or touch Pounce insecticide. Do not make yourself vomit if you swallow it. Wash your skin immediately if it contacts Pounce. If any contact occurs, call a poison control center and your doctor immediately.

This product is harmful to bees and do not apply where bee activity or nests are present.

Do not apply this product around ponds or waterways, as it is toxic to aquatic life.

Keep children and pets out of the area until the product has completely dried.

Do not use Pounce in aerosol or misting devices.
