How to Remove the Handle on a GE Refrigerator

Daniel Holzer

General Electric, also known as GE, is the manufacturer many kitchen products including stoves, coffeemakers, microwave ovens and refrigerators. The company's refrigerator line ranges from simple apartment models to high-end French-style with ice makers and water spouts.

With few exceptions, GE refrigerator handles can be removed to reverse the way a door opens for top or bottom freezer models, as well as to simply upgrade the handles to a nicer set. You can remove a GE refrigerator handle in minutes with just one screwdriver.

  1. Open the freezer door. Look at the bottom of the freezer handle to locate any screws securing the handle to the bottom of the freezer door. They may be on either the sides or the bottom of the handle, depending on the model of refrigerator. Unscrew the screws and remove them from the handle, setting them aside.

  2. Turn the handle out away from the refrigerator to lift the handle off of the mounting on the freezer door. Set the handle to the side.

  3. Unscrew and remove any screws holding the mounting to the freezer door.

  4. Open the refrigerator portion. Place your hand on the refrigerator handle and glide your hand up along it until you locate the screws securing the top of the handle to the door. They may be on the sides of the handles or at the top depending on the style of refrigerator. Unscrew the screws holding the handle to the refrigerator door on the top of the handle.

  5. Turn the handle away from the refrigerator and lift it off of the mounting on the refrigerator door. Put the handle to the side.

  6. Unscrew any screws holding the mounting to the refrigerator door and remove the mounting and screws.
