To rectify the situation, remove the running board before you repair or replace it. Anyone with good auto repair skills can remove a running board in less than 25 minutes.

Things You Will Need

  • Floor jack
  • 4 jack stands
  • Socket set
  1. Lift the side of the truck or SUV using the floor jack. Position two jack stands under the vehicle’s frame -- one in the front, the other in the rear -- before slowly lowering the vehicle onto them with the floor jack.

  2. Support the running board with two other jack stands, so it does not fall when you remove the mounting bolts.

  3. Remove the running board mounting bolts where the running board brackets bolt to the vehicle’s frame using a socket set. Lift the running board off the jack stands and set it aside.

  4. Lift the vehicle off the jack stands with the floor jack. Move all the stands away from the vehicle by hand. Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground with the floor jack.

The Drip Cap

  • Since running boards hang low off the sides of trucks and SUVs, they’re prone to impact damage from obstacles such as curbs, stumps and road debris.
  • Lift the vehicle off the jack stands with the floor jack.
