How to Clean Old Aluminum Storm Doors
Aluminum storm doors normally protect an inside door from outside elements such as dust, dirt, wind and rain. Over time, the aluminum's outside finish dulls and looks old. Proper cleaning will restore its original shine.
Aluminum cleaners that are sold at most auto stores and used on aluminum wheels also can be used on aluminum storm doors.
Things You Will Need
- Rubber gloves
- Bucket
- Water
- Dish detergent
- Large sponge
- Nylon brush
- Clean dry rags
- Aluminum cleaner
- Soft cloths
Tip
Remove rust from metal door hinges by rubbing with a steel wool pad or fine sandpaper. Brush away loose rust and clean the area with diluted white vinegar. Rinse the metal hinges with water and dry with a clean rag.

Put on rubber gloves and squirt two to three drops of dish detergent into a bucket of water. Swish with your gloved hand in the bucket to create suds.

Wash the aluminum door with a large sponge and the soapy water. Use a nylon brush on any hardened stains such as dead bugs. Do not use a steel wool pad on the aluminum because you may scratch the surface.

Rinse the storm door with clean water and the sponge. Make sure to remove all soap residue from the door.
