Is Using a Brita Water Filter With Tap Water Safe?
Using a Brita filter properly is a relatively safe way to filter out metals and chemicals from your drinking water, but to be absolutely safe you need to know what is in your tap water.
Most tap water contains chlorine residues which are there to prevent bacteria growth as the water travels from the treatment plant to your faucet. This becomes a concern to many individuals not only for its pungent taste but due to a number of research studies linking chlorine intake over periods of time to colon and bladder cancer.
Brita filters claim to remove 99 percent of chlorine from water, as well as heavy metals like lead and copper. The filters also remove fluoride, which arguably benefits children's teeth.
What Don't They Remove?
Brita filters do not, however, remove trihalomethanes (THMs) from drinking water. THMs are a group of organic chemicals suspected to be carcinogenic which are formed when chlorine reacts with natural organic matter.
Some argue that tap water might be just as safe as filtered water since both chlorine and THMs evaporate from water in a matter of hours. Also, much of the organic matter, metals, and sediment found in water may be caused by your home plumbing.
Brita filters do not kill bacteria. Rather, they trap it. This means that if you don't change your filter regularly, Brita filters can actually be harmful. Because all water filters are different, it is recommended you get your water tested and find the right water filter for your tap.
