How to Make a Spray Nozzle
A spray nozzle is a device used to disperse or discharge liquid into a fine jet, or spray. It is essential in distributing liquid over a wide area such as when watering your garden with a hose. Additionally, it can create impact force to clean solid surfaces such as windows or carpets. You can make one using plumbing supplies, including a water hose, quick connectors and misting nozzle.
Things You Will Need
- Misting nozzle
- Emory cloth or cloth sandpaper
- Thread gauge
- Wrench set
- Copper tubing cutter
- Knife
- 5/16-inch nut driver
- Pliers
- Measuring tape
- O-ring or rubber washer
- Hose adapter
- Hose clamp
- Teflon Tape
- Female water hose quick connector
- Male water hose quick connectors
- Pipe compound
-
Determine the size of copper compression nuts to use. Visit a home improvement store and select water hose quick connectors that can couple to your garden hose. Select water hose quick connectors and adapters that fit into the threads of your garden hose. Alternatively, use a thread gauge to determine the size.
-
Score a mark on one end of a garden hose, three inches away from the end. Make a three-eighth inch cut with a knife. Slide on a three-eighth inch hose clamp on the end of the garden hose. Insert a hose adapter into the garden hose. Tighten the hose clamp and screw in the female quick-connect water hose fitting to hold the adapter securely in place.
-
Connect the other end of your garden hose to your water faucet and turn on the water supply for a few minutes. This will flush out any debris, dirt or splinters. Turn off the faucet.
-
Wrap Teflon tape around the threads of your hose adapter in a clockwise direction. Insert the hose adapter through the O-ring or a rubber washer. Make sure that it is properly seated. Screw the misting nozzle into the hose adapter. Hand-tighten it only; do not use a wrench.
-
Turn on the water supply and inspect the connections for leaks. If it leaks, turn off the water supply, remove the mist nozzle and lubricate its threads with a pipe compound. Hand-tighten it gently into the adapter until it is completely seated. This will smash the pipe compound onto the hose adapter, creating a tighter seal.
-
Test your project. Turn on the water supply and check whether the spray nozzle scatters a jet of water. Aim your nozzle at your backyard of other target and check the distance of the spray. Adjust your water faucet to control the amount of water that flows through your garden hose. This should in turn affect the force of the stream of water that is sprayed by your nozzle. For instance, if you turn on the faucet fully, the spray nozzle should disperse a powerful jet of water.
