How to Use a Suede Brush

A suede brush is a type of brush that is used to clean and revive the nap or surface of suede. Suede brushes are generally made with either rubber bristles, metal bristles, horsehair bristles or any combination of the three held together on a wooden handle. Suede brushes can be used to brush suede alone or to brush suede cleaner into suede.

Suede is made from leather.

Step 1

Lay the suede item to be cleaned as flat as possible.

Step 2

Pour a small amount of suede cleaner into a bowl, if you need to use cleaner on your suede, and dip the suede brush into it.

Step 3

Vigorously rub the brush into the suede in a back-and-forth motion to remove stains, spots and restore the nap of any flat areas. If using suede cleaner, dip the brush as needed to coat the brush and work the cleaner into the suede as you are brushing.

Step 4

Place the brush on the fabric. Use long strokes, all in the same direction to finish brushing the suede. Pick any direction, such as right to left, or top to bottom, but you must choose one direction and use that direction to brush the entire surface of the suede item. This will provide a clean, even-looking finish.

Step 5

Allow the item to air-dry for at least 24 hours if suede cleaner has been used. If suede cleaner has not been used, the suede item can be used or worn immediately after brushing.
