How to Repair a Dent in the Wall

A dent in a wall can occur when something bangs against the wall, like the end of a couch or table. Often, you don't realize you have a dented wall until you move the furniture. If you don't have a door stop on your doors, you may have dents caused by the doorknob hitting the wall. Thankfully, repairing a dented wall is simple.

Walls are easy to dent, but repair is an easy process.
  1. Clean the damaged area to brush away any dirt with a clean rag.

  2. Spread the surfacing compound with a putty knife held at a low angle. Apply one layer of the surfacing compound to the entire damaged area and let dry.

  3. Apply one or two more thin layers of the surfacing compound to the area and let dry.

  4. Sand the damaged area with fine-grit sandpaper until the area is flush with the wall. Wipe away any dust with a clean rag. Prime and paint the damaged area if desired.
