How to Add Texture to Painted Walls
Textured walls can add depth and detail to plain painted surfaces. While there are many ways to achieve a textured surface on interior walls, one effective method is to use textured paint. You can roll on textured paint with a basic nap roller and achieve different effects, including sandstone, a smooth raised texture and a rougher popcorn texture. Prepare your walls, and apply the textured paint in small sections to make the application process more manageable.

Sand the wall surface with a fine-grit sanding pad to make sure the surface is completely smooth.

Wash down the wall with a damp rag to remove all of the dust left from sanding. Allow the wall to completely dry.

Pour textured paint into a paint tray. Roll the nap roller in the tray to saturate it with paint. The roller should be wet with paint, but not dripping.

Roll an even coat of textured paint onto the wall. Apply the textured paint in small sections to make it more manageable. Allow the first coat to dry for at least four hours, and apply a second coat if needed to achieve the desired texture.

Warnings
- Wear eye protection and a dust mask when sanding. Apply paint in a well-ventilated room.
- Do not tint textured paint. If you want color, wait for the textured paint to dry, and then apply the color of your choice.
