How to Use Batteries to Run Appliances

Batteries store energy and release it using direct current (DC). Most household appliances, such as lamps, microwaves and toasters, have power cords that operate on alternating current (AC). Connecting a car battery to a power inverter will allow the conversion of DC battery power to AC power for running these appliances. Emergency power batteries can run appliances as well.

Step 1

Connect an AC power inverter to a car battery or a RV/marine battery. Connect the AC power inverter to a 12V DC battery by taking off the red and black terminal covers of the inverter if there are any. Attach the positive (+) red wire to the positive terminal on the power inverter and use the terminal cover to secure the wire. Attach the other end of the red wire to the positive red terminal of the battery.

Step 2

Repeat Step 1 on the black wire and matching negative (-) black terminal. You can also connect the AC power inverter to batteries that are connected in parallel. Power your appliances by plugging your appliances into the AC power inverter.

Step 3

Recharge the battery connected to the power inverter when the battery's power runs low. Recharge the battery using the automobile motor, a gas generator, solar panels or wind. You can also replace it with another battery if it runs out of power.

Step 4

Use an emergency power battery. Purchase an emergency power battery, and plug your appliances into the AC outlet on the battery. Some of the companies that produce emergency power batteries are Xantrex and Duracell.
