Turn off the power being supplied to your pool's junction box. Use a screwdriver to remove the four screws holding the junction box's cover in place. Pull the cover off the junction box. Test that the power is off by holding a circuit tester against the exposed wires. Loosen the screws in the cord clamp securing the wires leading to the old fixture.
Lay facedown on the pool deck above the light fixture being removed. Reach into the water with the screwdriver and remove the screw securing the fixture in place. Unclip the fixture's bottom from the light niche and allow the fixture to float to the water's surface. (A niche is the metal can that contains the fixture.)
Use wire cutters to cut through the wires where they enter the old fixture. Set the old fixture aside. Strip the coating off the last 6 inches of each wire, using the wire strippers. Tear off the paper coating from around the exposed wires.
Set the new light fixture into the pool. Strip the coating off the last inch of the new fixture's wires. Bend the new fixture's wires and the old fixture's wires into hooks. Loop the two hooks together and secure them tightly with electrical tape. Go to the junction box and pull out the old fixture's wires. The new fixture's wires are eventually pulled through since they are attached to the old wires. Remove the tape and separate the wires.
Remove the wire nuts connecting the old fixture's wires with the junction box's wires. Place the new fixture's wires together with the same colored wire coming from the junction box. Tighten new wire nuts over the wire connections. Put the junction box's cover back in place and secure with the screws you removed.
Reach into the water and grab the new fixture. Wrap the extra wire around the fixture and place the fixture into the light niche. Secure the fixture in place with the screw you removed.
Things You Will Need
- Circuit tester
- Wire cutters
- Wire strippers
- Electrical tape
- Wire nuts
- Keep the electrical tape wrapping around the wires no thicker than the wire bundle, or it will not fit through the conduit.
- Pour pool tile soap down the conduit to loosen the cords if they become stuck.
