How to Get Rid of Mice With an Electric Beep

Emitting a high-pitched beep that's inaudible to humans, cats and dogs, ultrasonic rodent repellent devices are used to drive away mice and other rodent household invaders. These electronic devices don't rely on poisons, dangerous traps or smelly fumes to control the mice. They don't even kill them. The high-frequency sounds are designed to disturb the nervous system of the mice, making the living environment intolerable. The mice move out. According to a University of Nebraska study in 1995, however, many of these ultrasonic devices may not be as effective as they claim.

Mice can be hard to get rid of.
  1. Buy ultrasonic plug-in devices from a specialty retailer. Buy several devices, depending on how big your house is and how widespread the mouse infestation is.

  2. Plug the ultrasonic device into a wall socket in the room where you suspect the nest or entrance point of the mice is located. If you don't know exactly where the mice in your house are located or how they enter, place the first device in the room where you have found signs of infestation, such as droppings or damage.

  3. Place ultrasonic devices in every room that shares a wall with the first room. Mice live and travel in walls, and the high-pitched beeps are absorbed by walls. You need sonic waves on each side to penetrate fully.

  4. Remove as many objects and obstructions as you can from rooms where you place the devices. Soft objects such as couches and rugs absorb the sonic waves, making the devices less efficient.

  5. Remove any hamsters, gerbils or other rodent pets from the rooms that contain the sonic devices. Try to take them as far away from the devices as possible, even taking them to a friend's house for the duration of your ultrasonic house treatment.

  6. Turn on the devices and leave them on 24 hours a day for three to seven days. Watch for signs of mice infestation and retreat. If you find the mice have moved to other rooms instead of leaving the house, you may have to buy more ultrasonic devices.
