Wheelchair Ramp Width
The width of the wheelchair ramp should be no less than 3 feet wide to allow enough room for the wheelchair to make it's way up and down the ramp.
Wheel Chair Ramp Pitch
The pitch of the wheelchair ramp should have a minimum incline of 1 inch for every 12 inches of ramp or a 1/12 pitch. Some jurisdictions allow down to a 1/16 to 1/20 pitch.
Wheel Chair Ramp Landings
All wheel chair ramps must have proper landings at the bottom and top of the wheelchair ramp. The landings have to be at least 5-by-3 feet, the 3 feet being the width of the ramp. The landing can be as wide as the ramp width, but the length must be 5 feet.
Wheelchair Ramp Length
Wheelchair ramps can be up to 30 feet long before a landing is required between ramp sections. The landings between ramp sections need to meet the basic landing requirements of 5-by-3 feet and be level.
Wheelchair Ramp Guardrails
Guardrails must be placed on both sides of the ramp and be between 30 and 38 inches tall to protect the handicapped individual from falling off the sides of the ramp.
