The Machine

All the water is then filtered through the softener which makes the water soft and safe for your house and the members in it. To determine whether your home needs a water softening system you should have your water tested by a professional.

The Salt

There are three types of salts that are made and sold for water softener systems. They are rock salt, solar salt, and evaporated salt. There isn't too much difference between the three and the three can even be used in combination with one another. One thing you may want to consider if your water tends to rust a lot is get a salt that is made for systems that have a lot of rust. It will say this right on the front of the bag. The salt is sold in bags that are quite heavy. Most home owners buy the fifty pound bags. If you plan on buying the bags, but have a bad back you will need to take a friend or family member along who can lift them. These bags will last between two and three months each.

The salt should be checked once per month. Most systems will need a refill once per month. They system itself should last a long time if it is taken care of properly. It is not uncommon for a system to last twenty five years with good upkeep. This includes getting the system cleaned out once per year by a professional. Paying a small maintenance fee can keep your system running smoothly as well as have the system last as long as a person's roof.
