How to Take the Back off Your La-Z-Boy Recliner

If you've ever had to move a recliner to another room or another home, you know how awkward they are to carry. If your recliner is made by La-Z-Boy, you can easily and safely remove the chair's back -- and save your back in the process.

  1. Find the brackets on each side of the lower back of your La-Z-Boy recliner. Each bracket has an arm that locks. The back is locked into place when the arms are in the down position.

  2. Raise each locking arm up at a 30- to 45-degree angle. Slide the arms up with a flat screwdriver if necessary, being careful not to gouge the chair's fabric.

  3. Grasp the sides of the chair back with your hands. Lift up evenly on the back to pull it out of the brackets on the base of the chair.

  4. Reinstall the recliner's back by lining it up with the brackets. Push the back downward over the brackets. Press the arms down to lock the back in place.
