How Wide Does a Kitchen Need to Be to Have an Island

Andre Jones

The kitchen is sometimes referred to as the heart of a home. If counter space and storage are a priority, then add an island to your kitchen. Kitchen islands provide additional workspace for preparing food and additional space for storage.

Consider the Perimeter

The minimum size for an island is about 4 feet long and 2 feet deep. However, the size of the island is not the only thing to consider when deciding to use a kitchen island. It is important to measure the available space surrounding the island. Three feet is always a fair distance to measure between the edge of any side of the island and any other adjacent wall, cabinet, or appliance. If your space allows, 42 inches are preferred for additional navigation space.

Size of Your Kitchen

A kitchen should be at least 8 feet deep and 12 feet long to comfortably fit an island. At least 100 square feet of kitchen floor area is needed in order for the kitchen island to be fully functional.

Smaller Kitchen Islands

There are some alternatives for smaller kitchens. One option is to use a portable island, which can be moved freely around the kitchen. Even though portable islands are smaller, they function the same as stationary islands.
