How to Install a Door Frame & Door

When replacing a door in your house, you can purchase one already hung on the frame at your local building store. This will save you a lot of time since you will not need to place the hinges. Another way to save time is to continually check the door with a level to make sure it is straight.

Hanging a new door and door frame can take just an afternoon.

If a door is not straight, it will not close properly and if it does not close, you will need to remove the door and try again.

  1. Place the pre-hung door frame into the rough opening. Make sure that the door will be opening the correct way, with the hinges on the appropriate side.

  2. Hold a level against the jamb side with the hinges. Insert shims near each set of hinges so that the jamb will stand level. When the jamb is level, hammer finishing nails through the jamb and shims.

  3. Repeat Step 2 on the opposite side. Place the shims at approximately the same heights as the shims on the other side. Hammer in finishing nails through the jamb and shims. Double check that each side is still level.

  4. Close the door to make sure that it shuts tightly but without sticking. Insert shims above the header jamb if needed. Break off any shims that stick out past the door frame, by bending them back and forth.

  5. Place the door casing around the door frame. Hammer in a few finishing nails to hold the frame in place.
