How to Install Bemis Toilet Seats

Thomas West

Bemis is an American company that was founded in the early 1900s in Wisconsin. Bemis manufactures a line a bathroom supplies, parts and equipment that includes towels, shower curtains, bath accessories, candles, cleaning products, toys and toilet seats.

The Bemis toilet seat hinge is mounted from the top and is secured from underneath. Bemis also offers a Sta-Tite toilet seat that, according to Bemis, is more secure and less likely to loosen over time.

Standard Bemis Seat

  1. Spray penetrating fluid on the current toilet seat retaining bolts and allow it to soak in for a few minutes. Remove the nuts from the retaining bolts with a wrench. Lift the old toilet seat straight up from the bowl and remove it. Skip this step if you are installing a new toilet that does not have a seat already attached.

  2. Line up the threaded ends of the Bemis toilet seat hinges into the holes at the back of the top of the toilet bowl.

  3. Lower the seat so that it sits flat on the top edge of the bowl and the hinge threads protrude from the underside of the bowl.

  4. Slide a flat washer onto one of the threaded hinge bolts and hold it in place with one hand. Slide a lock washer over the treads and hold it in place. Thread a retaining nut onto the threads finger-tight. Repeat for the remaining hinge bolts.

  5. Tighten the nuts with a wrench alternately on each side until they are tight.

Bemis Sta-Tite Installation

  1. Line up the threaded ends of the Bemis toilet seat hinges into the holes at the back of the top of the toilet bowl.

  2. Thread the plastic Sta-Tite nuts onto the threaded ends of both of the hinge bolts underneath the back of the bowl by hand.

  3. Tighten each plastic nut with a wrench until the bottom of the nut sheers off.
