How to Get Red Gatorade Out of the Couch
Gatorade, a sports drink made by PepsiCo, comes in several vibrant colors. Fruit punch Gatorade contains a red dye that can stain any fabric with which it comes into contact. If you or your child accidentally spill red Gatorade on a couch, take action immediately for the best chance of completely removing the stain.
Things You Will Need
- Paper towels
- 1 tsp. dish detergent
- 1 Tbsp. ammonia
- Bowl
- 2 cups water
- White rag
- 1/2 oz. concentrated upholstery stain remover
- 1 pt. water
Use only cleaning products that are safe for use on upholstered fabric.
-
Blot the Gatorade on the couch as soon as you spill it with a paper towel. Work your way from the outside of the stain inward. The paper towels will soak up any excess Gatorade that has not yet made its way down into couch fabric.
-
Mix 1 teaspoon of dish detergent with 1 tablespoon of ammonia in a medium-sized bowl. Add 2 cups of water and stir.
-
Apply the cleaning solution to the red Gatorade stain on the couch. Wait 60 seconds and blot up the liquid with a clean white rag. Again, blot beginning at the edge of the stain and work toward the center.
-
Inspect the couch to see whether any of the red Gatorade remains. If it does, combine 1/2 ounce of a concentrated upholstery stain remover with 1 pint of water. Pour this solution over the red stain and wait the amount of time designated on the stain remover bottle. Blot the area again to draw up the stain and stain remover solution.
-
Rinse the previously stained area with a small amount of lukewarm water. This is necessary to get any left-behind cleaning solutions out of the couch. Blot dry with a white rag.
Tip
You can substitute vinegar for ammonia if need be.
Warning
Do not use bleach to remove the red Gatorade stain unless the couch is white.
