How to Remove a Jenn-Air Cooktop

Nathan McGinty

Jenn-Air's line of cooktops has built-in air filtering technology. This type of design allows you to install a cooktop in places in your kitchen that might not normally house a cooktop. If needed, you can remove a Jenn-Air cooktop for servicing or replacement.

The most important part of this process is to ensure that all the utilities have been cut to the cooktop before removal.

Warning

Some locations require that gas connections be serviced only by certified professionals. Consult your local building codes for details.

  1. Remove the grills from the surface of the Jenn-Air and store them. Pull out the filter from the filter drawer and set it aside. Move anything on the counter away from the Jenn-Air cooktop to give yourself room to work.

  2. Open the cabinets on the underside of the Jenn-Air cooktop and clear out anything that might be in the space below.

  3. Cut the power for the circuit where the Jenn-Air cooktop is installed at the main circuit breaker. The circuit should be identified by a map or other markings on the inside of the circuit breaker box. Move the switch to the "off" position.

  4. Turn off the gas supply to the cooktop, if this is a gas-powered model, turning the supply valve to the "off" position.

  5. Disconnect the ventilation hose from the air blower, located at the side of the cooktop. The hose may be connected by traps or tape. Cut the straps or the tape with scissors to remove the ductwork.

  6. Open the junction box where the Jenn-Air connects to the electric circuit, using a Phillips screwdriver. Loosen the wire nuts in place on the end of the wires. Use a voltmeter to test the electrical wires and ensure that the power has been cut. Cut or separate the Jenn-Air wires from the circuit wires, using a wire cutter if needed. Pull the Jenn-Air wires out of the junction box.

  7. Loosen the coupling where the gas supply hose connects on the underside of the stove, using an adjustable wrench.

  8. Loosen any brackets holding the Jenn-Air cooktop in place on the underside of the countertop.

  9. Lift the Jenn-Air cooktop up and off the counter. Have an assistant help you if this is a heavy model.

  10. Restore the power to the electrical circuit.

  11. Replace the grill filter, grill cover and any other accessories on the top of the Jenn-Air cooktop. Start the cooktop and test it for functionality.
