How to Install Zigzag Springs in a Chair
How to Install Zigzag Springs in a Chair. So your favorite reclining chair has a broken zigzag spring and you'd like to replace it in time for Sunday's game. Replacing a zigzag spring in a chair is a bit different than replacing a single coil spring, but with a few tools and a little knowledge you can easily do it.
Here's how to install a zigzag spring in your chair and be lounging by halftime.
Flip the chair over and remove the furniture backing fabric by prying the staples off the back of the chair frame with a screwdriver. This will give you a good idea if you will need to remove the arms of the chair to get to the spring. In most cases you most likely will not have to do this.
Pry the staples off the upholstery fabric of the chair and remove the padding and fabric. Do this carefully so you don't rip it. You will need to use this fabric again.
Untie the broken spring. Make a note of the spring configuration and where it is tied. You might want to make a drawing before diving in.
Find a replacement zigzag spring for your chair. You can find these at specialty furniture repair websites and shops.
Re-tie the spring and set the zigzag ends in the wood frame. Test for structural integrity.
Place batting and foam in the center of the upholstery fabric and center that on the seat. Be sure to cut the new foam in the same configuration as the foam you are replacing.
Staple upholstery fabric to the chair frame. Start with one staple on each side and work around the frame. The goal is to eliminate puckers in the fabric. When you are done, replace the bottom black backing.
