How to Make Curtains for Apex Windows
Unusually shaped windows require unusually shaped curtains. Apex windows have an unusual appearance. The top of the window extends up on both sides to a point at the center. Curtains for Apex windows must be made with the same shape to prevent hiding the Italian-style window frame.
Window coverings add charm and elegance to any room, but nothing beats a gorgeous window treatment over a stylish Apex window.
Things You Will Need
- Tape measure
- Fabric
- Pins
- Sewing machine
- Curtain rod
- Curtain rod hooks
- Scissors
- Iron
Tip
You can make your Apex curtains out of any type of fabric you desire. Satin, velvet, cotton, burlap, or even lace will make gorgeous window coverings for your Apex windows.
Warning
Do not attempt to hem the bottom edge of your curtains without first hanging the curtains in place. You will only get a proper measurement if you cut them while they are hanging.
-
Measure from the tip of the window frame down to the floor. Measure the length of each side of the center. Purchase two pieces of fabric, as long as the measured length plus 6 inches, and double the width.
-
Turn the top of both pieces of fabric down 1/2 inch, and secure them with pins. Use a sewing machine to sew a stitch across the hem. Now turn them under again 4 inches and secure with pins. Use a sewing machine to run a securing stitch.
-
Run a curtain rod through the openings you just made in the tops of both fabric pieces. Secure them to the wall with curtain rod hooks at the angle of the Apex window. Connect them at the top center. The lower part of the curtain will hang on the floor.
-
Cut across the bottom of the fabric pieces so they are even. Make sure the rods are hung in their permanent position. This will ensure that your cuts are straight. Start at the outside edges where the curtain hangs the longest, and cut into the center where they will already be the appropriate length.
-
Remove the curtains from the rods and hem the bottom of each fabric piece 1 inch with a sewing machine. Also run a hem stitch down both sides of each curtain. Iron the seams so they lay flat.
-
Place the finished curtains back on the rods, and hang them on the hooks. You can tie them back or let them hang loose. Either way, they will accent the shape of the Apex window.
