How to Clean Rubber Out of Carpet

Kay Ireland

Sticky rubber adhering to your carpet can be a nightmare to remove. A small patch of rubber from a shoe sole, the foot of a couch or another source, can often be removed with a bit of time and elbow grease. For large rubber stains, you may need to replace your carpet.

Clean Rubber Out of Carpet
  1. Test mineral oil in an inconspicuous area of your carpet. Leave it on for 24 hours and look for any fading or change in color before proceeding.

  2. Douse a white rag cloth with mineral oil and use it to break up the rubber.

  3. Use the scrub brush to loosen the rubber pieces and brush them away. Work until there are no solid pieces of rubber left on the carpet--just a dark stain.

  4. Test the turpentine on a small, inconspicuous test patch. Leave it for 24 hours and assess.

  5. Dab turpentine on the stain with the white cloth. Press down on the cloth to soak up the black stain.

  6. When the stain has been removed, soak a clean cloth in water and apply it to the carpet to clean the area.
